Industry Applications - Digital PCI Bus Extension
Practical application for Avocent's award-winning PCI bus
extension technology is far reaching - virtually any environment where
PC/hardware security is of concern, desktop space is a premium, centralized
support and maintenance is essential, and where end-user uptime is critical.
Trading Floor Applications
Real-time market data is vital
to any trader - but how useful is that data if your system
goes down? Or if you have to switch between multiple monitors
to get the full picture? Or even if the picture on your monitor
isn't crisp and clear to begin with?
Avocent's technology solves these problems at the trading
desk and beyond. Deploying a bus extension appliance to every trader's desktop
and removing the physical PC chassis to a centralized location offers such
benefits to a trading floor or other financial institution as:
-
Eliminate most end-user downtime by allowing for centralized IT maintenance and
repairs; with the added use of cold sparing in the IT room, a trader can be
back up and running in as little time as it takes to replace a jack and reboot
a system.
-
Because end-users still maintain
full use of their PCs, they also retain full multi-media
capability, and support for peripherals beyond a monitor
mouse and keyboard - legacy serial devices such as PDAs
and Blackberrys, removable media devices, digital cameras,
and other peripherals, including multiple monitors and essentially
all PCI-based digital video configurations.
-
100% flawless digital video
over one or multiple monitors.
-
With the physical PC chassis
removed, the noise and heat generated by that system is
removed. The smaller footprint desktop appliance can easily
be mounted underneath the desk with optional brackets, freeing
both desktop real estate and leg room.
-
Connection speeds between the
desktop appliance and the remote PC exceeds one Giabit per
second, full duplex (essentially over two Gigabits per second
aggregate throughput) using either CAT 5 or dual strand
fiber optic cabling.
Industrial Automation & Process Control
Manufacturing and automated-process environments present unique challenges for
IT - shortened PC lifecycles due to harsh environments as well as the
difficulty of performing routine maintenance at locations often difficult to
access. With PCs relocated to a central area with bus extension technology,
many of these problems are inherently solved.
With PCs relocated to a central area, many of these
problems are inherently solved:
-
PC lifecycles are extended when removed from harsh or heated environments
-
Costly ruggedized PCs are no longer required for manufacturing floors,
providing flexibility of choice in PC and/or server purchases
-
Connects to any operating system and any hardware that is PCI-based
-
Routine maintenance and upgrades
are performed from a single, easily accessible location
Government and Secure Facilities
Allowing physical access to a PC is the ultimate security void - if a user has
access to the CPU, RAM, and disk drive, security can be easily compromised. So
the best way to secure your sensitive or classified data is to secure the
physical machines where that data resides.
In many of today's secure environments, IT staff must take
the time to physically remove and reinstall hard drives from multiple desktop
computers every day to ensure that data and access to it is carefully
controlled.
This time and expense is eliminated with bus extension
technology, affording IT departments the time to attend to more valuable,
technical tasks. For the secure environment, bus extension technology can also
provide:
-
The DDL2000 and DDL2050 appliances also contain a half-length PCI expansion
slot that can be used, for a Fortezza secure key card and reader when both
physical and electronic keys are necessary to satisfy security requirements.
-
The use of fiber optics makes
the fiber models ideal for highly secure facilities; when
using a fiber transport, media emissions are undetectable,
making it impossible to electronically 'eavesdrop' on data
transmissions.
