Why does a virtual desktop cost less than traditional client server infrastructure?
There are several reasons, but the main reason is that we change the support paradigm from troubleshoot and repair to simply replace.
This new paradigm applies to the OS on the thin client under the desk, the thin client itself and any virtually hosted applications on the back end.
Additionally, power consumption at the desk is greatly reduced, which saves money. The back end infrastructure can be located in a secure data center away from the user, where energy prices are lower.
Are support costs lower by moving to a virtual environment?
Support cost can be cut by 20% to 50%.
How does the user experience change?
The user experience changes very little from a current Windows Client/Server infrastructure.
Where does the user’s Windows operating system run?
Physically the OS can run on different hardware platforms located anywhere on your network. The OS can run on a standard computer, or many OSs can run on a SAN powered by blades or servers.
What OS runs on the Thin Client?
Windows or Linux.
On the back end, do I have to run the user’s O/S in a virtual environment?
No, the thin client connects directly to any PC/Blade on your network, or a virtual session.
Is the solution redundant?
Yes, when a virtual back end infrastructure is implemented, two sessions of the same OS can be running simultaneously. Therefore, when one virtual session crashes, the user can log on to the back up session that is running in a different physical location.
Can I use Blades in a virtual desktop environment?
Yes, you can use blades from any manufacturer.
Are Storage Area Networks used in the solution?
SAN’s are optional, but facilitate incredible scalability.
What bandwidth is required?
As low as 56K per 1280x1024 resolution monitor.
Do I need to implement V-LANs?
No.
Can I run many different sessions or PCs at one time?
Yes, multiple sessions can run at the same time.
How does the solution work in a multi-monitor environment?
Several virtual sessions can run simultaneously with each session using up to 4 screens.
Are there any compatibility issues?
As all IT infrastructures are unique, testing needs to be done to determine any compatibility issues.
